In the past I just couldn't understand why my Rivera was recording so dark...almost like it was muffled but instead of investigating further i would just use another amp. Today I took the time to make sure all the impedence settings were correct and A/B the cabinet with all the other cabs i have around my house. first up... Rivera 2x12 cabinet with Vintage 30's...just records muddy, dark and muffled, tried moving the mic around to no avail. used the clean setting and some heavier sounds and both were...well...mud Marshall 1936 2x12 cab with G12T-75W...noticable change for the better clean, actually sounded clean and the distorted sounds had much more ooomph! to them. the difference was night and day. was the brightest and loudest sounding cabinet. Orange 2x12 with Super Leads...less brightness than the Marshall cab...more of a deep tone...nice clean nice distorto Orange 2x12 with Greenbacks...the clean channel sounded a bit more sparkly than the other Orange cab but the distorto channel didn't have quite the same character of the other Orange. All sounded head and shoulders better over my Rivera cab and I wonder what would make this *big* of a difference? Just the speakers? the cabs all have different dimensions and i am sure that it would make a large difference... the Marshall is tallest and thinnest-maybe that's responsible for the brightest sound... the Orange are shorter but much deeper and Page Hamilton from Helmet said they always gave him a deeper tone (when he used to play them)... the Rivera cab dimensions are the shortest and squattest of all the cabs tested, but could this be solely responsible for a cab sounding this bad? i am going to try swapping some speakers out as i would finally in my lifetime like to play through a same brand matching head/cab combination! |
